Heel Pain Q&A
What Causes Heel Pain?
Most heel pain is caused by inflammation and swelling of the plantar fascia, a ligament that runs on the bottom of your foot from your heel to your toes. This condition is called plantar fasciitis. Pain is more common first thing in the morning, or after a prolonged period of sitting or lying down. Heel pain may be due to tight calf muscles, heel spurs, obesity, gout, trauma, over use, or improper shoe gear.
How is Heel Pain Treated?
Heel pain is managed conservatively by custom molded orthotics, night splints, physical therapy, oral or topical medications and steroid injections as needed. If obesity is a contributing factor, weight loss is also recommended. If conservative treatment fails, surgery may be a medical necessity. Total Foot Care Podiatry & Wound Clinic specializes in minimally invasive surgery to relieve heel pain. Call us to make an appointment with one of our experienced foot surgeons.
