Knowing When to See a Podiatrist for Toenail Fungus Infections

Updated: Aug 27

While toenail fungus infections can often be tackled at home with care and dedication, it's important to remember that these infections can become more severe and spread to other nails. If left untreated, toenail fungus can also be quite unsightly. This post will first guide you through the symptoms and causes of toenail fungus and provide some home remedy options to help you navigate the best course of action. But most importantly, we'll discuss when it's time to see a professional and who the right healthcare provider is to tackle this stubborn infection.

Treatment for Toenail Fungus

Symptoms

Although fungal infections can target both fingers and toes, toenail fungus tends to be the more frequent culprit. Symptoms of this infection can be seen in the nail where the fungus grows. Due to this reason, the toenail can be discolored, misshapen, brittle, or thickened. Fungus infections can also smell bad. And in extreme cases, the toenail may even separate from the nail bed.

Causes

Diverse fungi types that exist in the environment cause toenail fungus infections. Cracks in the nail and surrounding skin can create an opening for germs (fungi in this case) to enter and lead to an infection.

Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus Infection

You can start toenail fungus treatment by applying Over-the-Counter (OTC) topical antifungal creams on your infected area. Such creams are readily available in most pharmacies. However, if this technique proves ineffective or the infection rebounds after a temporary improvement, there are a few other strategies to explore. The list includes the following:

  1. Snakeroot and tea tree oil contain natural antiseptic and antifungal properties. Combing and applying tea tree oil and snakeroot extract on the infected area may treat the fungus infection

  2. Many studies have found that mentholated salve can help treat fungal infections.

  3. A few studies propose soaking infected toenails in vinegar or Listerine and leaving them to dry naturally.

When to See a Doctor

Fungus species are available in various types. Each has diverse growth habits, resistance power, strengths, and weaknesses. Due to this reason, different fungal species respond differently to toenail fungus treatments. A method working effectively on a specific fungi type may have inadequate or no effect on another one. Some fungal species can develop resistance over time, making things worse. Visiting a doctor is recommended to avoid such complications in toenail fungus treatment.

We recommend that patients should seek medical attention immediately if their nails come loose from the nail bed or turn black or brown, as these are the symptoms of worsening toenail fungus infection. You should also visit a doctor for toenail fungus treatment in the following scenarios:

  1. Home remedies are not working

  2. Infection is spreading

  3. The nail is bleeding and swelling

  4. Infection is affecting your ability to walk
