Tips for Taking Care of your Feet this Winter

It’s no surprise that the winter months often leave people forgetting to take care of their feet, and we can’t blame you because nobody is spending the cold season with their feet out. But, we’re here to tell you to change up your routine and add foot care into the mix. Here are a few tips to help you take care of your feet this winter so they’re ready to go when spring rolls back around!

Keep Your Feet Clean

Ideally, you’re keeping your feet clean year-round, but it can be easy to neglect, especially when they’re covered most of the day. Washing your feet thoroughly every day will help prevent unwanted side effects like ingrown toenails and fungus. After washing your feet, spend a little extra time fully drying them before putting on your socks and shoes.

Wear Proper Socks

Before getting ready to brave the cold, make sure you’re wearing thick enough socks to keep your feet warm. They should be snug and able to keep in body heat without constricting your feet from movement. Remember, they’re socks, not a cast!

Moisturize

Pretty much everyone can relate to the fact that their skin gets extremely dry during the winter. Well, your feet are no different than your legs, arms, and hands. They deserve some extra love too! To help prevent cracking and discomfort, use some hydrating lotion on every part of your body, including your feet.

Wear Proper Shoes

Not only is wearing the right shoes going to help you feel more comfortable, but it’ll also help with preventing unnecessary injuries. Look for shoes that are specifically designed for the activities you do all day. For example, if you’re an avid runner, it’s best to buy a good pair of running shoes. Also, make sure your shoes offer plenty of arch support.

Rest Your Feet

Your feet really have it rough, especially if you have a job or do activities that involve a lot of walking around. This is why it’s important to take some time to rest your feet. One way to do this is by sitting down and propping up your feet or soaking them in a bath. Not only will resting help you feel refreshed and recharged, but it will help prevent injuries.

Exercise Your Feet

Before heading out for some winter activities, you should be getting your feet warmed up. An easy way to do this is by calf exercises, moving your feet in circular motions, or leg lifts. You don’t need to dedicate hours to do this but instead, do just enough to get your blood flowing.

Understand the Why

Now, you want to make sure that you understand why all of this is important. By knowing why you’re going to be more likely to take care of your feet. Foot problems can lead to a variety of issues such as back and hip pain, poor posture, and overall discomfort. Now tell us why you wouldn’t do something every day to help prevent all that?

Visit Your Podiatrist

Finally, the best thing you can do this winter is to visit your Podiatrist if you start experiencing any pain or unusual discomfort. If you still find yourself dealing with foot problems even after proper care, then you know it’s time to head to your Podiatrist.
